Product Development Process Introduction

Product Development (PD) is the backbone of industry. Mistakes do occur during developing products causing additional costs, increased development time, and often defective products.
This interactive session will focus on understanding the different aspects of PD: by element, by industry, and by function; the structure of New Product Development Process (NPDP); the roles/responsibilities within PD; and PD tools. We will discuss sources of mistakes, product quality, and cost savings. The course will briefly introduce Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and the relationship with PD. We will also discuss Product Development Complexity, Product Development Maturity, and improving Product Development using lean sigma approach.
Topics include:
- Product Development as a business process (is it an art or science)?
- Product Development, innovation, manufacturing, and post manufacturing: Interfaces.
- Product Life Cycle Management (PLM)
- Product Complexity and Product Development Maturity
- Characteristics & benefits of a robust PDP
- PD Roles & Responsibilities and Organizational Development
- How to approach problem solving, cost saving, and product quality
-Breaking up the PDP into pieces and the corresponding tools (VOC, SOW, BD, CAD, CAE, DVP,FMEA, DFM, DFSS, etc..)
- Project management / lean sigma within PD
- Closing communication gaps
- Short group project
- Discussion of best practices
About Our Speaker, Dr. Sam Wakeel
Dr. Sam Wakeel has a PhD in Engineering from the University of Iowa. He is CEO of Engineering Systems Consultants (ESC), which provides management consulting to U.S. and international clients. Dr. Wakeel has more than 15 years of experience in Engineering, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), product development, and management consulting spanning the automotive, construction, energy generation, orthopedics and general manufacturing industries. His work portfolio includes Ford, DTE Energy, PMP (Canada), Navistar, DURA, Edscha, Cummins, Caterpillar, and others.
Dr. Wakeel's expertise cover engineering design, supply chain management, product integration and manufacturing/assembly, outsourcing, program/project management office (PMO) development, decision making, performance measurement, portfolio management, training, and organizational development (scoping, skill sets, and startup).
Most Recently, he has successfully led three consulting engagements at DTE Energy and established: 1) Cost reduction PMO (program management office), 2) SAP migration & readiness PMO, 3) Capital projects Controls Group, and 4) Design and startup of the Fossil Generation Center of Excellence organization.
In addition to consulting, Dr. Wakeel teaches at IPFW and Ivy Tech.
