A Special Inside Look Into the Cummins SIx Sigma Model Speaker: George Strodtbeck, Executive Director, Corporate Quality – Cummins, Inc.
In mid-1999, as Cummins was beginning its Six Sigma journey, 6 key leaders benchmarked the TQM Network's Six Sigma Executive Leadership training. The seeds sown in 1999, were then nurtured through a relentless focus on business improvement (using some of the finest professionals in the world) and visionary leadership to flourish into a program deployment that has been held up as a model among many!
The Six Sigma quality program, launched in January 2000, is an integral part of Cummins’ overall business strategy. Their deployment has yielded in excess of $1.6B in real savings and they have avoiding spending an uncountable amount of money. Cummins estimates this program generates savings of approximately >2.5% of their annual revenue per year, while infusing quality into every process. They have also recently expanded the program to include processes with customers, suppliers, distributors and corporate social responsibility with positive results.
We are delighted to have George Strodtbeck, Cummins’ Executive Director of Corporate Quality come to give us a special inside look into their Six Sigma Model.

Inspire – Clarify – Align – Unleash
Four Leadership Imperatives that Drive Greatness
Keynote Speaker: Rebecca Hession, FranklinCovey
Crowd favorite, Rebecca Hession of Franklin Covey, is back and the keynote for Excellence 2007! Rebecca, is a dynamic and inspiring speaker that always delivers -- her clients get help in reaching sustained superior performance through a balanced approach of building the capability of the leadership and workforce, while forming a process for relentless execution
The strength of your leadership has never been more important than it is today in determining the success of your projects, cultural transformation and overall organization. But “old school” leadership styles just don’t work in the Knowledge Worker Age. People cannot be managed as if they are simply assets—or worse, liabilities—viewed in the organizational scheme on the same level as office furniture or computers. In order to unleash the potential of their team, today’s leaders must see workers as “whole people” who have a unique contribution to make in moving the organization forward. Leaders must manage the knowledge each worker brings to the table, not just the tasks those workers are responsible for completing.
Great leaders not only see the world differently, they do things differently. Specifically, these skills can be defined as the 4 Imperatives—critical, essential functions of great leaders that:
- Inspire trust among direct reports, superiors, and peers.
- Clarify purpose by articulating why goals are established and how individual work contributes to those goals.
- Align systems and work processes so they facilitate rather than hinder achievement.
- Unleash the unique talents and contributions of people on their team.
In meeting these essential requirements, leaders ensure that they will be able to tap the full potential of their team in achieving the organization’s most important goals. And they will be able to achieve superior results not just in the short term, but year after year—consistently, measurably, predictably.

11:30 Your Supply Chain vs. Theirs
Speaker: Scott Lasater, Lean Six Sigma Enterprise Institute/TQM Network
Wouldn't it be smarter to have your employees and indeed all of your supply chain swimming downstream with the current rather than battling upstream against the river's inner physics?
The same is true when a Black Belt or other change agent attempts to improve the cycle time, lead-time, or throughput of any process within your supply chain. There are over 20 known X's that have already been proven to influence these Y's. Rather than being "theories" that need to be tested as hypotheses, these are "scientific laws" previously established by the Black Belts of their day -- scientific investigators of decades and centuries past.
These X's are the hidden keys to optimal flow. Do you know what they are? Most don't!
Come see how to recognize where your product/service/information delivery system is currently designed to contradict the physics of flow! And find out how your supply chain can out perform your competitors supply chain.
